So, I saw IN THE NAME OF THE KING: A DUNGEON SIEGE TALE a few weeks back. Yeah, yeah, I know, it’s balls. But I was compelled to watch it because it’s directed by possible the worst film director of all time. If you are unaware of this man, Uwe Boll is responsible for most of the horrible video game film adaptations out there, and quite possibly the reason why people may utter the blanket statement “movies based on video games suck. Single handedly, I might add. He has even sunk to such depths as challenging his reviewers to boxing matches. Why? Only Uwe Boll knows why.

So, why pray tell would I subject myself to watching this movie? I’ll tell you. Jason Statham, or Turkish as my buddy calls him (from SNATCH) is cool. Leelee Sobiekski is sorta cool. And any movie with Burt Reynolds, we’ll… nuff said…? But the cast aside, alot of the promotion Uwe has been doing for his upcoming films had me convinced that he had totally accepted his role as the butt of every current film joke, at least in nerd circles. Armed with that knowledge, it seemed as though he embraced this strange status with open arms, and was willing to keep making movies his way. Because, after all, people were still paying him to make movies, which means people out there liked his movies. Like it or not, he had an audience.

I haven’t seen all of Boll’s flicks, but I was determined to be “in” on the joke. And Dungeon Siege did not disappoint. Though falling incredibly short of what the movie purportedly aimed to be (a LoTRish type of fantasy epic), it was highly entertaining. Dare I say, the time spent in the theatre for ItNoTK:aDSt was time better spent than when I saw Cloverfield. I would say CLVRFLD is a better flick in a heartbeat, but I had a hooting hollering good time making fun and LOLing to Uwe Boll’s game film than JJ Abrams youtube monster movie.

Watch it with a few friends, and take the piss out of Dungeon Siege. And then save up your pennies for POSTAL.

Shoes!

A sneaker pimp I am not. I do love them, but I’m not known for curating a collection of shoes. But recently I did acquire a pair of Globe skate shoes off eBay, if only for nostalgia’s sake. I had a pair exactly like this 3 or 4 years ago and run them into the ground, so I was excited as all hell to find a pair online, after many unfruitful years searching stores. I probably won’t put these shoes into the rotation until summer rolls around…

I keep wondering if it’s about time I give up on the sneaker/skate shoe thing, and buy some MAN shoes. What are those anyway? Loafers?

I survived Cloverfield…. without vomiting!!!

So, yeah. I was super amped to see Cloverfield since the very first teaser trailer way back in the day. I can’t remember what movie it was in front of, but you know the one. The movie’s title wasn’t even revealed at the end of the damn teaser. All they showed was the Bad Robot ident at the beginning. I immediately looked up the trailer and discovered it was the new JJ Abrams project, code named “Cloverfield”. I fell in love with the ilovebees-esque viral marketing, and could not wait for January 18th 2008. I kinda expected them to rename the movie, but Cloverfield stuck.

Now, I knew the movie was going to be shot via handheld camera, to give it that visceral, cinema verite feel. This would not bode well for me, as I do get a bit of motion sickness when watching really shakey videos. After seeing the Blair Witch project, I figured, okay, I can handle this. I’ve seen plenty of poorly shot family home videos, and I can last pretty long without getting sick. I did survive, without getting fully sick, but man, by the end of the movie, my head was spinning more than the camera! And all I kept thinking was, just fucking ZOOM OUT, and the video wouldn’t be so wobbly! Damn. I could’ve shot the the damn thing smootherly.

I know, I know, the dude with the camera was totally freaking out, I mean, there was some life threatening monsters attacking the city, so yeah, I guess I should be a little more lenient with the critiques of his filming techniques. But here’s an idea. when you’re life is in danger, how’s about putting the camera down and running for your fucking life? No?

Anyway, having extremely high, HIGH hopes for Cloverfield, it was sure to be a let down. But I actually work differently than most people. When I have big expectations for a film/music/game, and it comes up short, I’m not disappointed. This is why: Whatever that got my excited about the particular piece of art/entertainment in the first place would most likely be a snippet of a scene shown in a trailer. So, as long as that little 10 second clip in in the movie, and perhaps a few more clips just like it, I’ll be happy with the movie. Even if the rest of the flick sucks balls, as long as I saw that statue of liberty head fall from the sky, and a few more scenes of equal carnage, than I’ll leave the theatre a happy man.

So, I left Cloverfield quite happy, and a little sick. Of course, once the giddiness of seeing NYC destroyed by a monster had died down, yes, the films flaws presented themselves. But who cares. NYC was just destroyed by a monster!!!

I’ve been trying to stick to a proper, work schedule, and so far so good. I actually slept all night last night, since I didn’t have to pull an all-nighter to meet a deadline.

But, that means I have sorta been neglecting my blog. Suckage. But I did get this weeks KISSING CHAOS: ‘TIL I DIE episode done. Check it out. Hit me back with with your comments.

new chapter.

New year, new chapter for Kissing Chaos: ‘Til I die.

So far, the new year is pretty much the same old, same old. I’m trying to break bad work habits, and actually follow schedules and what not. If I was ever to make a new year’s resolution, that would be it. But thus far, I’ve burnt the midnight oil every night of the new year, and lounged around all day. I used to convince myself that I got more work done this way, but here I am, fighting deadlines. The song remains the same.

I am working on a short animation project, so that’s new. Totally for personal reasons, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. I can’t wait to show it to y’all once it’s done.

I’m still chugging away on the free art giveaway sketches. I didn’t expect that many people to respond, so I’m kinda swamped.

What else. Umm, re-watching I AM LEGEND as I type this. It has it’s moments. Sadly, one of the scenes perceived to be really striking, is kinda lame. SPOILER. When Sam dies, yes, it’s meant to be moving, and sure, it is. However, it’s totally bootleg emotion. It’s like the creators needed something to move the audience, and took a look in their pantry of previously tried, tested and true filmic scenes, and tossed in this old yeller moment, rather than inventing something new. Now, I’m not saying I’m not guilty of doing the same. I have done many a time in my writing. I guess it irks me when people are getting paid mad cash to sample other people’s work.

I also saw Nancy Drew last week. The most recent Emma Roberts version. Being a huge Drew fan from when I was a kid, I was pumped to see this new movie trash it’s legacy. I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, it wasn’t great, and it felt sorta like one of those stories where you write a sentence, then pass the story on to someone else to write the next sentence, and so on and so forth. But I had some genuine laugh out loud moments, and the acting and Nancy Drew’s wardrobe was great!

Enough. Back to drawing. Oh, and there’s a new PROTEST THE HERO album coming out on January 29! Cop that shit!

Yesterday Bill Gates spoke at CES, saying it’s his last full day at Microsoft. I guess this might have an impact on the world? Maybe? But who cares when there’s a vid of Gates playing guitar hero?

Special appearance by “Velvet Revolver”’s Slash.

Grab a seat and warm your hands up by the fire! I know it’s cold out there! heh. Ah, ye old fireplace channel. The modern hearth. This view kept me toasty over the holidays. I hope you had a good one too!

No new kissing chaos comic this week! Sorry! Too much chilling happening in lieu of new years celebrating has taken it’s toll on me. Also, I’m drawing a shit load of sketches for everyone who was able to take advantage of my free art giveaway last week! I hope to mail everything off next week.

Seriously, all the best for the 2008!
